Everything you need to know about foundation

The perfect foundation can be one of the toughest makeup items to buy. The correct foundation should brighten, even skin tone and conceal any blemishes. Ultimately, it should leave your skin with an overall “healthy” complexion. The wrong formula though, will enhance imperfections, grab to dry spots and can leave you looking kinda cakey.

With so many choices of natural foundations on the market, it can feel somewhat overwhelming trying to choose the correct one for your own unique skin type. So, to take the hard work out for you, I have complied some of my top tips below…..

TIP # 1. FIND THE RIGHT SHADE

If the colour is off, everything is off! When testing colour, you want to match to two areas. Your chest and the side of your face. NEVER test your neck (which is usually much lighter) You want your body and face to be the same shade right? You can always blend some bronzer down your neck to darken.

TIP # 2 . AVOID SILICONES

Silicone is a very common ingredient used in the mainstream beauty world to create a smooth/silk like finish to the skin. Although silicone is effective at what it does, our skin is a living breathing organ and using an occlusive (air and water tight) ingredient like silicone is similar to wrapping it in cling wrap. Not only is silicone a synthetic ingredient, it can also cause congestion and breakouts. Just like sugar can have different names to disguise itself so do many personal care ingredients – lookout for anything ending in “cone” on the label e.g dimethicone, phenyl trimethicone.

TIP #3 YOUR FOUNDATION WILL ONLY EVER LOOK AS GOOD AS THE SKIN IT’S SITTING ON

Truth be told, foundation will not erase your skin concerns. If you have problematic skin I can’t stress this enough - you want to get to the root cause of WHY!! Covering up your skin with layers of foundation isn’t going to fix the issue, and whilst using the correct skin care will definitely help, it isn’t always the solution. If you suffer from acne, eczema, dermatitis or any other skin condition, it’s almost always going to be an internal factor that requires addressing.

TIP # 4 . FIND THE RIGHT FORMULA FOR YOUR SKIN TYPE

Finding the right formula for your skin type is pretty important if you want your foundation to look natural on the skin and last all day. Below are my top tips and tricks for each skin type, as well as my top foundation picks.

Oily / Acne prone skin

If you suffering from oily/acne prone skin, then chances are your main concerns are your makeup sliding off during the day or looking super shiny by lunchtime. If this sounds like you, hopefully you will find the below tips helpful -

1.     Ensure you use the right skin care to balance the oil.

2.     Use a primer

3.     Carry blotting papers to blot out excess oil

4.     If you want more of a matte finish don’t use an illuminating foundation or a primer that contains shimmer

COMBINATION SKIN

Combo skin types are typically oily in some areas and normal/dry in others. Finding the perfect foundation can sometimes take a bit of experimenting. You want to be using something that’s keeps everything in balance and minimises oil, without drawing attention to dry areas.

TIPS –

1.     Always use a primer to balance out the dry and oil places on the face.

2.     Look for a formula with a satin finish.

3.     Set the oily areas with powder and leave the dry areas free of powder

DRY SKIN

If you have dry skin, and your anything like me, chances are you are forever chasing the glow! Dry skin can become flaky and textured if its not looked after. You want to stay clear of heavy powders (unless they are mineral based) as these grab to dry spots and settle into lines.

TIPS –

1.     Invest in a good illuminating primer or highlighter

2.     Always use liquid foundations with a dewy finish

3.     Avoid using powder in any dry spots

4.     Use a face mist throughout the day to rehydrate your skin
