Choosing the right cleanser for your unique skin type is uber important to making or breaking a good skin regime. You want to choose a product that will effectively clean the skin, without leaving it feeling dry or stripped of its natural oils.

Sadly, many mainstream cleansers are jam packed with some pretty cheap and nasty ingredients like - Sodium lauryl sulfate (foaming agent/harsh detergent), triclosan (antibacterial ingredient - linked to hormonal disruption), mineral oil (derived from petroleum). Just to name a few. Using these ingredients may make you FEEL like you've achieved ultra cleansed skin, but they actually leave the skin dehydrated and depleted of natural oils.

TIP #1 - Avoid mainstream cleansers and micellar waters -

If I was to tell you that the active ingredient in Micellar water was car coolant, would you still pop it on your face? Now whilst I am not into fear mongering, I know that that once your learn something, you can’t unlearn it. So once I discovered that there is no difference between the Propylene Glycol used in car coolant to the one that’s used in the skincare industry…. I completely avoid it.

What is Propylene Glycol?

A synthetic petrochemical used as a humectant and emulsifier. It’s used in anti-freeze solutions, in brake and hydraulic fluids, as a de-icer, and as a solvent. It has been known to cause skin reactions such as hives and eczema.

Look out for: PEG, propylene gycol, PG/Propandiol, hexylene glycol

TIP #2 - Choose your style

When choosing a cleanser, you want to choose a texture you enjoy using and most importantly suits your skin type.

tip #3 know the different types of cleansers

Foams and gels - Great for combination, oily and acne prone skin.

Cleansing milks - Suitable for normal/dry and sensitive skin.

Oil based cleansers - Generally great for all skins. Because oil breaks down oil, oils cleansers can help to reduce excess oil production by balancing the skin's PH,  helping to balance oily skin types.

How to choose a cleanser?

Knowing your skin type is the first step when choosing the right cleanser. Here I have listed my top cleansers for all skin types (tried and tested of course).

DRY SKIN -

If you have dry skin you will want to use a cleanser that will add moisture and hydration. Cream and oil based cleansers are fab for this!

THOUGHTS - The scent of sweet orange and geranium will intoxicate your senses from the first waft. The milky texture feels like a "breath of fresh air" on the skin.

HOW TO USE - Spread over dry skin and massage in gently. Using a warm moistened cloth, gently wipe over the face to remove dirt, make up and dead skin cells. Use morning and night.

COMBINATION SKIN -

The most common skin type. Combination skin work best with gel/foam based cleansers. They give the skin a good clean without being to harsh or drying.

THOUGHTS  - A lightly foaming wash that gently cleanses, balances and removes excess oil and impurities. It will assist with balancing sebaceous activity without depleting the skin of its natural oils. I love how quickly it removes makeup and helps to balance the skin.

HOW TO USE - Spread over damp skin and massage in gently. Removes with a bamboo facial towel if possible (not essential)

OILY SKIN -

If you have oily skin its really important to use a cleanser with non-comedogogenic ingredients (non pore clogging) Gel or foam based cleansers work well to remove excess oil and impurities.

THOUGHTS - This cleanser is jam packed with some amazing ingredients to help decongest, gentle exfoliate and refine oily skin. Including superfine white French clay and lactic acid, certified organic pomegranate and cucumber with high anti-oxidant, anti-ageing, and anti-inflammatory properties. Certified organic kakadu plum with potent vitamin C and anti-oxidant content may help promote collagen production, maintain elasticity and improve damaged skin. Very impressive for such a great price point!

HOW TO USE - Spread over damp skin and massage in gently, avoiding the eye area. Removes with a bamboo facial towel if possible (not essential)

SENSITIVE SKIN -

People with sensitive skin can react to all different things. Looking for a cleanser thats fragrance free is the number one tip I can give. Cream or oil cleansers are usually the best, as they are soothing and gentle.

My pick - Miskin smooth cleanser

THOUGHTS - An ultra gentle cleanser formulated with a magical organic emulsifier that turns milky in contact with water. It will soften, smooth and calm the skin.

HOW TO USE - Apply cleanser to dry skin and emulsify with warm water, then remove with a muslin cloth.
